Roasted Chicory

Chichorium Intybus

Chicory roots have been used as a beverage for over 2000 years and remain a popular beverage as either an additive or alternative to normal coffee. The leaves also have a long history of use as an endive like vegetable still widely added to salads.

The name Chicory, from the Latin Chicorioum is thought to have a much earlier origin dating back to ancient Egypt.

Chicory roots contain a number of fascinating properties, not least their inulin and inula content. These two starchy fibres are used in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries for many nutritional health benefits.

In the case of our Instant Roasted Chicory, the sweet inula and inulin chemicals alter to produce a rich aroma and coffee like flavour to the beverage. Like all Aquasol herbs, this material is ground down very fine. In the case of Chicory, most of the fibre will dissolve into hot water or milk.

To many people, particularly across the Middle East, Roasted Chicory is a great additive to coffee, intensifying both flavour and aroma, some will even suggest it allays some of the jitteriness caused by drinking too much coffee.

To us, Chicory is a welcome addition to the NutriPunkt family, where we try to ensure our herbs, which form such a fundamental part of the human diet are available in a convenient, accessible form. Enjoy!
